The Vera Institute of Justice seeks an Accounting Manager to join its Finance Department on a full-time basis.

The Finance Department

The Finance team is responsible for protecting Vera s assets and ensuring the financial stewardship of Vera s resources. We provide critical updated financial information to executives, senior managers, and the Board of Trustees to aid in decision making and engage in financial strategic planning. Our team also ensures financial compliance for all grants and contracts, ensures timely delivery of the annual audit, supports program leaders with budget/actual information, billing, funder reporting, payroll, and accounting. Overall, the team provides comprehensive finance and accounting services to support the organization s mission in driving change in the justice system.

Who you are

You have strong technical knowledge about accounting, and not-for-profit accounting standards and financial reporting requirements in particular. You have expertise in working with accounting/ERM systems (Abila MIP a plus!) and experience in using systems to manage the flow of financial processes and reports. You are motivated to use your accounting and finance skills to support a mission-driven organization seeking to drive change in the justice system. You are enthusiastic, collaborative, curious, and kind. You are intellectually curious and willing to be nimble and work across multiple projects, often at the same time.

In this role, you will:

  • Report to and work with the Deputy Chief Financial Officer
  • Supervise and develop a team of three (3) staff on the accounting team in the Finance Department: two Accountants and the Payroll Administrator.
  • Oversee compliance on Vera s cash disbursements.
  • Oversee and ensure the timely recording of transactions into Vera s general ledger, including cash receipts, payroll and fringe expenses, and other expenses.
  • Manages the payroll function to ensure timely and accurate processing.
  • Manage the reconciliations and review of all accounts on the balance sheet, including cash, investments, receivables, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and all liabilities.
  • Ensure timely delivery of Schedule of Temporarily Restricted Net Assets and reconciliation of all restricted and unrestricted contributions.
  • Oversee 941 reconciliation and remission of all payroll taxes in a timely fashion.
  • Oversees the administration of corporate credit card program; assists Deputy Chief Financial Officer with cash management and day-to-day banking operations.
  • Ensure appropriate segregation of duties on the accounting team, as well arrange for back-up for critical functions as payroll and accounts payment, when necessary.
  • Responsible for timely delivery of the trial balance at year end and serve as primary point of contact for the financial and other audits.
  • Work with Deputy Chief Financial Officer and Finance Manager in developing and providing recurring financial reports to aid in decision making.
  • Other duties as assigned by Deputy Chief Financial Officer.

What qualifications do you need?

  • BA/BS/BBA in accounting.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), especially for not-for-profit organizations as well as Uniform Guidance for Federal Awards.
  • 1-2+ years of prior experience in managing and supervising others strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; must be able to effectively communicate financial information in a way that is easy to understand.
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and work under deadlines.
  • Effective at supervising and motivating staff.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment; patient and approachable.
  • Possesses intermediate to advanced skills in Excel, especially in using V-LOOKUP, CONCATENATE, SUMIFs, and pivot table functions.
  • Experience in using Abila MIP accounting software and Microix requisitioning preferred.
