State and Local Tax Manager

Premier Accounting and Advisory firm Berdon LLP is seeking a highly qualified State and Local Tax (SALT) professional to join the Tax Department in our midtown Manhattan headquarters. Your strong technical knowledge of state and local tax tax issues and ability to analyze pending tax legislation will help you serve as a resource of expertise for Berdon advisors operating across various niche disciplines.

Primary responsibilities include:

Collaborating with and advising Berdon's Tax and Audit Departments regarding current and evolving SALT policies.

Assist in leading a team of highly skilled tax and audit professionals with resolving all avenues relating to state and local tax audits and controversy.

Serve as an integral technical resource in developing client tailored solutions to tax and business solutions.

Developing well-reasoned and practical approaches to a client's tax situation and arriving at appropriate conclusions.

Managing state audits including recommending possible issue resolution proposals and other strategies with regard to state income tax and sales tax audits.

Assisting in the negotiation of settlements with state authorities and/or Appeals and summarizing recommendations for management

Applying strong written and oral presentation skills to demonstrate technical knowledge to existing and potential clients as well as in educating the Berdon team

Advising clients regarding the most efficient way to achieve their business objectives as related to planning for income, franchise, sales and use, real property transfer taxes state and local tax incentives and other state and local taxes.

A successful candidate must be able to deliver clear, concise and thorough work product on time. You should take ownership of projects, know how to set priorities and, when faced with potential roadblocks, to ask appropriate questions and seek counsel to help overcome them. Your professionalism should extend to ensuring that job execution and documentation is accomplished in accordance with required policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • 5 + years experience working in State and Local tax for a public accounting firm, other professional services firm or comparable industry experience
  • CPA, MS in Taxation and/or LLM preferred (or in process)
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting a plus but not required.
  • Masters of Science in Taxation, Juris Doctor with Accounting or Tax, or Masters of Law in Taxation preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
